Wanna know more about being an Assistant Language Teacher? Well, we've got you covered!

An Online Assistant Language Teacher or A.K.A. OALT, works alongside Japanese Teachers of English (JTEs) and essentially helps students practice the English language. The JTEs will introduce some new vocabularies and/ or phrases to the students, then OALTs will practice it with them, whether it be in scripted phrases or free talking. OALTs basically serve as our student's "models" in speaking English.

Now, let's walk you through a typical work day as an ALT :)

First and foremost, an OALT meticulously prepares for each class. They start by checking their daily schedule to optimize time management before, between, and after lessons. Most importantly, they always review the lesson materials and prepare engaging visual aids and props to deliver a more dynamic learning experience for students.

Before getting onto the next step, they ensure that all their equipment is in good condition: checking audio and video quality, internet connection, and updated applications. A clean and quiet teaching area is also essential for a conductive learning experience for the students. Some OALTs even apply light make-up and wear professional attire so they can look their best once they greet their students with a smile!

Before classes begin, OALTs will enter a short meeting with our Japanese coordinators in order to discuss the goals for their lesson. Afterwards, OALTs will be disseminated to what we call "breakout rooms," where our students will come in and classes will begin.

During class, OALTs typically interact with either a single student or a small group of three to four. They ensure each student receives ample opportunity to speak, allowing everyone an equal chance to practice their newly acquired English skills. The students' grade levels range from Elementary to Junior High School, so OALTs always make sure to adjust their English speaking levels and materials accordingly.

After classes, OALTs create an informative report of what transpired during classes and provide insightful feedback on what can be improved to better deliver lessons to our students.

Now let's hear some tips from our ALT veterans!
