ALT vs. ESL

Both classes are done online and in a work-from-home or home-based setup. But what's more to know about?

Students

Students are from public elementary and high school students in Japan.

Students are with different ages from 3 years old to senior citizens. 

Classes

ALTs are basically working as an assistant teachers to the classroom teachers in Japan. Students wait in line to have conversations with the tutor to practice their English.

ESL tutors are having one-on-one lesson with the student. Being one class is good for 25 minutes. 

Class system

Classes or lessons are already assigned to the tutors, Monday to Friday, from 7:30 AM to 2:30 PM. 

Classes are in a booking system where the student are free to choose their tutors to take lessons with. 

Schedule

In UNHoop, our ALTs (part-time) are required to comply with the working schedule of Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 2:30 PM (PHT). Additionally, ALTs (part-time) service is mostly needed during the Japanese school year.  No classes during Japanese school break and Japanese holidays. 

Tutors are free to choose the time they would want to teach. They can open classes from 5AM to 11:30 PM (PHT). Also, tutors can open classes anytime, from January to December of the year.

Peak hours

No peak hours for ALTs, but is expected and required to teach from 7:30 AM to 2:30 PM(PHT) with one-hour lunch break.

During weekdays, peak hours would be from 5AM to 8AM and 5PM onwwards. Meanwhile, we also have high volume of students on both weekends.  Hence, tutors are encouraged to open clases on these days well. 

Training

Training is done online and only a two-day training. This includes theoretical and immersion. Training duration might extend depending on your performance.

Training is done online and includes both asynchronous and synchronous training. Training usually lasts for 7 days, but might also extend depending on your performance.

Rate

Rate is PHP 55 per thirty-minute class. Pay is guaranteed for the 7:30AM to 2:30 PM timeframe, regardless of lesson allocation, unless management has previously announced hat there will be no lessons assigned for a specific time, date, or seasonal period (ex: winter and summer vacation)

PHP 55 per 25-minute class. Only booked class is paid.

Incentives

No incentives given for ALTs. However, they are required to attend upskill training during periods without assigned lessons. This training, however, can  give the tutors opportunity to earn more.
